The maps illustrate the developments which have taken place in a park from 1980 until the present.
Overall, it is clear that the network of paths has been extended now compared with 1980. A picnic area and playground form part of the present park.
There are now three paths within the park, whereas there was only a single path in 1980. The tree at the top right hand corner of the map remains, although there are now picnic chairs, picnic tables and a barbecue facility situated near the tree.
In 1980, the pond to the left of the path had benches around it, while nowadays the pond is smaller and the benches are bigger. At the bottom of the map, there were two flower beds in 1980, one on either side of the gate. However, these do not exist today. Bushes have replaced one of the flower areas and a playground has replaced the other flower bed.

It is true that some countries have been unable to reduce their dependence of fossil fuels to meet their energy needs. In contrast, other nations have been investing heavily in alternative energy sources and I personally consider that this is a very positive development.
Reliance on fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas has negative consequences for both human health and the environment. Firstly, the extraction and use of fossil fuels carries grave health risks. The burning of these fuels in power stations, or in cars or other forms of transport pollutes the atmosphere, and endangers health. It results, for example, in poor air quality in major cities across the world, such as Los Angeles, Shanghai or Sao Paulo. Admissions to hospitals rise sharply when air quality becomes critical. Secondly, the burning of fossil fuels adds to the greenhouse effect at a time when international efforts to reduce our carbon footprint must succeed in the effort to fight climate change.
I believe that investment in renewable energy is essential to avoid an ecological crisis. Building wind farms and using solar panels to heat homes, factories and offices would neither pollute the air that we breathe nor deplete natural resources. In terms of human health, the incidence of life-threatening conditions like respiratory disorders, would be reduced. From an environmental perspective, this would be an environmentally-friendly energy strategy. It would minimize habitat destruction and tackle the pollution that stems from the activities of the fossil fuel extractive industries.
In conclusion, I would argue strongly that reducing reliance on fossil fuels and investing in renewable forms of energy will bring enormous positive gains for both human health and our environment.

Vocabulary from the environment:
- to reduce the dependence/reliance on fossil fuels
Meaning: to decrease people’s consumption of fossil fuels, like oil, coal or gas.
Example: Governments must invest heavily in solar and wind energy projects in order to reduce our dependence/reliance on fossil fuels.
- alternative energy sources
Meaning: refers to any energy source that is an alternative to fossil fuel
Example: Clean energy which does not pollute the Earth can only come from greater reliance on alternative energy sources.
- the greenhouse effect
Meaning: the natural process by which the sun warms the surface of the Earth. The greenhouse effect occurs when Earth's atmosphere traps solar radiation because of the presence of certain gases, which causes short wavelength visible sunlight shines through the glass panes and warms the air and the plants inside.
Example: Our burning of fossil fuels is increasing the greenhouse effect and making the Earth hotter, endangering all life on the planet. - carbon footprint
Meaning: a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide that is produced by the daily activities of a company or person
Example: By providing subsidies, governments should encourage companies to reduce their carbon footprint through energy efficiency or other ‘green measures’.
- to fight climate change
Meaning: to try to prevent changes in climate patterns, such as rainfall, temperature and winds.
Example: Unless we consume less of the Earth’s natural resources, it will be impossible to fight climate change and safeguard our future.
- renewable energy
Meaning: energy is renewable when it source, like the sun or wind, cannot be exhausted or can easily be replaced (like wood, as we can plant trees for energy)
Example: More funding is required from government funds to help companies to develop renewable energy, such as companies which produce solar panels for buildings. - an ecological crisis
Meaning: a serious situation that occurs when the environment of a species or a population changes in a way that destabilizes its continued survival
Example: Environmental degradation caused by human activity is provoking an ecological crisis which threatens our existence.
- wind farms
Meaning: an area of land on which there are a lot of windmills or wind turbines for producing electricity
Example: Wind farms should be constructed in mountainous areas or in the sea, close to land.
- to deplete natural resources
Meaning: to reduce the amount of natural resources.
Example: Timber companies must not be allowed to deplete natural resources by cutting down trees without planting new trees to replace them.
- environmentally friendly
Meaning: behavior or products that do not harm the environment
Example: We can help to protect the environment by using detergents and cosmetics that are environmentally friendly.
- habitat destruction
Meaning: the process that occurs when a natural habitat, like a forest or wetland, is changed so dramatically by humans that plants and animals which live there.
Example: The elephant population in the world is declining because of habitat destruction caused by human exploitation of the environment. - to stem from
Meaning: to be caused by
Example: Scientists say that global warming partly stems from the increase in car exhaust emissions.
Vocabulary from health:
- to carry health risks
Meaning: to have effects which could be bad for one’s health
Example: Smoking and drinking alchohol are potentially dangerous habits, because they carry serious health risks.
- life-threatening conditions
Meaning: illnesses which are likely to kill somebody
Example: Great advances have been made in the treatment of life-threatening conditions such as cancer and heart disease.
Other vocabulary:
- incidence [noun]:
Meaning: the extent to which something happens or has an effect
Example: She lives in a poor area of the city, with a high incidence of crime.
- extractive [adjective]:
Meaning: relating to the process of removing or obtaining something, especially minerals
Example: Extractive industries such as coal mining result in huge damage to the environment.
